PROGRESS OF THE BREATHING LIFE TRUST IN CYPRUS

For the past three years, the Breathing Life Trust has sought to raise awareness for the need for the only specialised lung centre for children in Cyprus. Through careful planning we have taken time to identify the precise needs and content of the new Centre in order to maximise impact. Whilst developing and understanding the needs of child care in Cyprus we have also assessed and responded to the needs of the District Hospitals who are carrying out a vital role across Cyprus. Last year the Breathing Life Trust donated almost £25,000 for the provision of important lung function equipment to several District Hospitals and The Paediatric Respiratory Unit at the Makarios III Hospital.

In May 2007 The Breathing Life Trust received a request from Dr Yiallouros a Trustee of the Breathing Life Trust and Head of the Paediatric Respiratory Clinic at the Makarios Hospital Nicosia,. It stated that there was urgent need for new equipment which would be particularly useful for the diagnosis and treatment of asthma sufferers, as well as immotile cilia syndrome a rare genetic birth defect that involves the blocave the assistance eand expertise entreking of respiratory passages. There existed a long waiting list of children who required testing with this equipment.

The Breathing Life Trust collaborated with the existing Paediatric Respiratory Unit at the Makarios 111 Hospital Nicosia to acquire at a cost of £28,000 (40,000 euros) a Nitric Oxide Chemilluminescence Analyser.

With this donation our commitment to Cyprus now exceeds £53,000 pounds
